On 22-23 June 2013 ASA participated in the Ostrowiec Days of Osteoporosis organized by the District Authorities in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski.
On Saturday, 22 June 2013, a meeting of the town and district inhabitants with various specialists in osteoporosis was held. Dr Dawid Bączkowicz from the Opole University of Technology gave a lecture entitled: "Osteoporosis - a silent bone thief". He was invited by our company which is actively involved in the organization of this campaign.
Thanks to ASA's cooperation with Multidiagnostica, in front of the District Authorities' Office in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski two Osteo-buses were stationed for two days and bone densitometry was performed in them. 610 persons took part in the tests.
Bone densitometry makes it possible to detect osteoporosis in its asymptomatic stage, that is before the bones are broken. Thanks to this painless, completely non-invasive and safe examination many people had their first opportunity in life to learn about the condition of their bones, and in case of detecting an abnormality, to obtain information concerning the steps to be taken in order to prevent any bone fractures in the future.
The results of densitometry tests make it possible to estimate whether a person belongs to the group being at risk of getting osteoporosis or osteopenia. Osteoporosis leads to bone fractures, even as a result of minor injuries. Osteopenia is a condition where bone density is slightly lower than normal, and it is a precursor of osteoporosis.
All those who are in a risk group, i.e. elderly people aged 60 and over, people in convalescence periods after bone fractures, and women in the pre-menopausal and menopausal periods, were recommended to use the preparation Osteovit 1000 containing calcium carbonate which is a source of ionized calcium (Ca2+). We should remember that calcium is necessary in order to maintain healthy bones.
On Sunday, 22 June, a family health picnic was held. It started with a Nordic Walking march. Its participants could take part in a lottery and win prizes: ASA's preparations.
Next, everyone could have free of charge medical examinations in ASA's tent; later, the tests were carried out in the Conference Room of the District Authorities Office because of the high temperature outside. People could have their blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol level measured.
During the picnic, also spirometry tests and nevi diagnoses could be obtained.
While people were waiting for the tests to be performed, they could watch artistic groups' performances, fire-fighters shows, combat sports shows, and participate in numerous games and competitions.
We would like to thank the District Authorities from Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski for inviting us to cooperate in the organization of the Ostrowiec Days of Osteoporosis and also for their acknowledgements of our support and organization of medical tests and a training conference for the inhabitants of the Ostrowiec District. We would also like to agree with the following quotation: "It is good to help others, but it is even better to teach them how they can help themselves."
George Orwell
