On 27 November 2010 the Sudecki Third Age University in Wałbrzych was the venue of a meeting dedicated to education, promotion and protection of elderly people's health.
The organizer and initiator of the event was again ASA together with the Babie Lato [Indian Summer] Association from Opole.
The subject matter of the Wałbrzych meeting was the locomotive system's dysfunction in elderly people. Dr. Dawid Bączkowicz - a physiotherapist, academic teacher and vice-president of the Indian Summer Association cooperating with the magazines published by ASA, i.e. "An Appetite for Health" and "I Am Fit", in which he is in charge of the section entitled "From the perspective of a physiotherapist" - gave a lecture on "The locomotive system's dysfunction in elderly people", after which he answered all questions asked by the participants.
In his lecture, Dr. Bączkowicz spoke about the serious problems that the elderly may have with their backbones and joints as a result of an inappropriate style of life, lack of exercise, incorrect position of the body, overweight or genetic factors. Which symptoms should cause concern and trigger a visit to a specialist? How to avoid osteoporosis?
What should be done in order to keep the joints in good condition and where can medical help be obtained? The students of the Third Age University in Wałbrzych learned the answers to all such questions.
In particular, Dr Bączkowicz stressed the importance of preventive measures and dietary supplementation in preventing and reducing the severity of ailments connected with the locomotive system's dysfunction. Taking good care of bones and joints is especially important for elderly people because it reduces the risk of injuries and serious fractures whose severity may be enhanced by osteoporosis or the generally weakened condition of their health.
Diagnostics of all these ailments is possible due to specialist examinations which should be carried out as preventive measures or during medical treatment.
The locomotive system's impairment is particularly painful as it not only causes suffering but is an obstacle in everyday life. We should take good care of our joints and bones, as a healthy body means also a good mood every day.
After the lecture, the Third Age University students could get additional information during individual consultations. The event passed off in a very pleasant atmosphere and all participants received little pro-health souvenirs from ASA.
