Although urinary incontinence afflicts both sexes, it is twice as common in women as in men. Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine in amounts causing health or social problems.
The most frequent types of urinary incontinence include stress urinary incontinence, urge incontinence, or so-called overactive bladder, mixed urinary incontinence (a combination of stress urinary incontinence and an overactive bladder), and other types of urinary incontinence.
Contrary to appearances, urinary incontinence is not only a problem of elderly women. Data indicate that as many as 12 % of women aged 30 and more suffer from this unpleasant ailment. Yet, it is women in the menopausal period (45–50 years old) and post-menopausal period (with the decline of the sex hormones level) who experience the most urinary incontinence-related problems. This is a problem of as many as half of the women population in the menopausal period.
It does not mean, however, that urinary incontinence problems may not occur much earlier in life. Factors contributing to the development of the disease include obesity (urinary incontinence is four times as common in obese women as in slim ones), pregnancies and childbirths (in particular, assisted births), high birth weight of the child, female genital prolapse, frequent urinary tract infections, constipation, hard physical labour, smoking, chronic coughing, and some neurological diseases.
In total, even 2 million Polish women may suffer from urinary incontinence problems. The statistical data are incomplete, however, due to the fact that women very often feel ashamed to admit to suffering from such ailments and they do nothing in order to get rid of them. Almost 2/3 of women suffering from urinary incontinence have never consulted a physician about it. And those who have decided to talk to a specialist about their problems have usually delayed it for 3 years.
